Venezuelan political activist detained at ICE check-in, separated from wife and toddler, pressured to accept deportation to Mexico
2026
Country of origin: Venezuela
A political activist from Venezuela, recognized as a refugee and granted withholding of removal in 2025, was detained at an ICE check-in in 2026 and separated from his wife and toddler daughter. His wife, who went with him, was told "things have changed with the new president." She says officers pressured him to accept removal to Mexico, warning of five to ten years in prison and criminal charges if he refused and of being sent to Africa otherwise: "It is psychological torture." His daughter asks every day to call her dad and looks out the window saying, "Mama, Papa is coming!" He was released after months in detention. He had been granted withholding rather than asylum solely because of the 2023 asylum-ban regulation.
