Moroccan trans woman who fled violence held in ICE detention about two years, including after winning protection
2026
Country of origin: Morocco
A trans woman from Morocco who survived years of violence because of her gender identity was detained for about two years. It took more than a year in detention for an immigration judge to grant her withholding of removal, and the government kept her detained afterward. She told her attorney that after so long inside, sunlight in the yard hurt her eyes: "When I came to the U.S., I felt safe because I know it's the land of rights. But just the idea of deporting me to another country, taking me to an unknown, I'm panicking, scared, don't know what to do."
