Iranian refugee detained at ICE check-in a year after winning protection, held nine months until court order
2026
Country of origin: Iran
An Iranian refugee was detained at an ICE check-in nearly a year after an immigration judge granted him withholding of removal. He had attended all his hearings and presented his whole case from outside detention, and was shocked to be detained after finally winning. An ICE officer first told him he would have a hearing, then, when he said he had withholding, that they were looking for a third country. "That was my first experience in life being detained, being behind bars. I was going crazy. I was about to sign everything. I just wanted to get out of there," he said. He spent about nine months in detention before a federal court ordered his release.
