Georgia town welcomes ICE's decision to sell planned detention warehouse
Oct 12, 2026·Location: Oakwood, GA
ICE and DHS have decided to sell a 540,408-square-foot warehouse in Oakwood, Georgia, that officials had originally planned to convert into an immigrant detention facility holding 1,000 to 1,500 people. The federal government purchased the building for $68.2 million last year without informing local officials until months later. City leaders in Oakwood and a similar facility planned in Social Circle, Georgia, say they oppose having detention centers in their communities.
