Elvin (a pseudonym), 37, is a Honduran barber and house painter who writes rap and trap music. He entered the United States through the CBP One app in November 2023 with an open asylum case and lived in Florida, Indiana and Ohio, where he also did roofing work. Early one morning ICE agents came to the house in Canton, Ohio, that he shared with other workers. When he went toward the back door, an officer opened a window and told him not to move, and agents climbed in through the window. He says no warrant was mentioned. They took him away in his underwear, without his phone, money, clothes or hair clippers. He was held about four months in a prison alongside people serving criminal sentences, where his prescribed stomach medication was refused as "not available." "They told me that medicine isn't available because that place isn't a hospital," he said. "I have been humiliated and scorned over a glass of water." Told that fighting his case would mean about another year in detention with no lawyer, he gave up his asylum claim. "If I wanted to fight the case, I was going to be locked up longer and they were always going to deport me." He was removed to Honduras, where gangs had extorted his barbershop, and walked eight days and nights to reach Mexico. He now sleeps on the street in Villahermosa. His partner is still in Indiana. HUMSI interviewed him in Villahermosa in September 2026.
