Wilmer: Honduran ex-officer wins protection from return, ICE sends him to Mexico

Wilmer (a pseudonym), a former Honduran police officer, fled death threats and won his case alone after 16 months detained. ICE sent him to Mexico anyway, forcing his fingerprint onto a 10-year ban.

Wilmer (a pseudonym), a former police officer in Honduras, fled on March 12, 2024, after death threats meant to stop him from testifying in a prosecutor's investigation of government employees and senior police officials. Detained after entering the United States, he spent 16 months at the Eloy Detention Center in Arizona, fighting his case without a lawyer, and won withholding of removal protection: an immigration judge ordered that he could not be sent back to Honduras. "The judge's order says I could not be returned to my country. So they sent me to Mexico," he said. On September 4, 2025, ICE removed him to Mexico through Nogales, Sonora. He refused to sign a form barring him from the United States for 10 years. "I didn't want to sign, but two ICE men grabbed me. They grabbed this finger by force, between the two of them, to make the fingerprint." He was bused straight through to Villahermosa. His refugee claim in Mexico was denied and is on appeal, he finds only occasional painting work, and his partner and seven-year-old son are still in Honduras. Asked how detention affected him, he said: "You get stressed, anxiety hits you, you get depressed. Being locked up for 16 months." HUMSI interviewed him in Villahermosa in September 2026.
