Cuban man sent to Mexico without a judge, now homeless and hungry

Felipe lived 18 years in Miami. Held in a dark cage he called "the chicken coop," he was told to wait indefinitely or accept Mexico, where he now sleeps on the street.

May 2026Miami, FLCountry of origin: Cuba

Felipe (a pseudonym), about 55, lived 18 years in Miami as a permanent resident under the Cuban Adjustment Act. He lost his residency after a prison sentence, and while he was inside his car and belongings were stolen. When his sentence ended he was moved from a Florida prison into an immigration detention facility he knew only as "el gallinero," the chicken coop. "They're like chicken coops with bars, all bars inside... almost this dark," he said. He says he never saw an immigration judge. He was told he could wait an unknown length of time in detention fighting his case or accept deportation to Mexico, because Cuba would not take him back. He was deported to Mexico in about May 2026 and now sleeps on the street in Palenque, Chiapas, without food or family. "I have no food, I have no life, I have nothing," he said. HUMSI interviewed him in Palenque in September 2026.
