Aleksander Nilaj, founder of the Open Hand food bank on Lydig Avenue in the Bronx, was detained by ICE while attending an immigration court hearing and taken to the Delaney Hall Detention Center in New Jersey. Nilaj immigrated from Albania about 20 years ago and started the food bank, which community members say has been a lifeline for elderly residents in need of meals. The food bank has stopped distributing food until he is released. Rep. Ritchie Torres said Nilaj has no criminal record and that his attorney plans to file an appeal demanding his release, calling the detention 'an injustice against his family and the community that loves him.'
