Gladis Yolanda Chavez Pineda, an organizer with Organized Communities Against Deportations, was detained by ICE on June 4 while reporting to a check-in at a location on South Michigan Avenue in Chicago's South Loop. Her daughter and attorney said she had a pending asylum claim, a work permit, no criminal record, and no deportation order, but was given no reason for her arrest. She was shackled for a seven-hour van ride and transferred between three facilities, ultimately landing at a facility in Kentucky where she said there were no available beds. Her attorney obtained a stay order preventing her imminent deportation, but she remains in custody, leaving her 17-year-old daughter to live with a sibling while waiting for her mother's calls.
