Aissatou Diallo, a 55-year-old grandmother and home health aide from Queens, was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement at LaGuardia Airport on Nov. 25 while traveling to see her son in Texas. She was held at Federal Plaza in New York City and at facilities in Texas, Louisiana and New Jersey before a federal judge ordered her immediate release nearly two weeks later. Diallo fled Guinea around 2001 out of fear of political persecution, and the government had acknowledged in 2012 that she could not be deported there because she feared persecution or torture. The judge also ruled the government cannot attempt to detain her again, and advocates including her niece, who runs a nonprofit, and New York Immigration Coalition's president helped mobilize support for her release.
