Melissa Atwell-Holder, a Guyanese social media activist known as 'Melly Mel', was detained by ICE agents who arrived at her home in Brooklyn, New York, over a visa overstay. She is married to a U.S. citizen, Paul Holder, and has an approved I-130 petition along with a pending I-485 application for permanent residency. More than two weeks after her detention, she was released on $7,500 bail, and a U.S. Immigration Judge later terminated the deportation proceedings against her, citing her marriage and pending residency applications. Atwell-Holder alleged her arrest was a politically motivated attempt by the Guyanese government to silence her investigative work, a claim Guyana's Attorney General has dismissed as unfounded.
