Marc R.: Haitian teacher in Ohio faces deportation as TPS ends
Marc Rocher, a science teacher and translator who has become a lifeline for a Haitian American family's adopted sons, faces losing his legal status when Haiti's TPS protections expire.
Aug 6, 2025Columbus Grove, OHCountry of origin: Haiti

Marc Rocher, 32, fled gang violence in Haiti in 2023 through a humanitarian parole program and was granted Temporary Protected Status along with a work permit, which allowed him to work as a science teacher and Haitian Creole translator in rural Ohio. He became central to the Schafer family, tutoring their two adopted Haitian sons who struggled with trauma and language barriers, and later began tutoring at Columbus Grove and Lima City Schools. On June 27, 2025, the Trump administration announced it would terminate TPS for Haitians effective Sept. 2, though a federal court in New York blocked the order, extending protections until Feb. 3, 2026. Community members, including students, teachers and a local pastor, have organized letters to officials and school administrators are working with attorneys to sponsor Rocher for an H-1B visa to allow him to stay.
