Efrain Rodriguez, an asylum seeker and father of two, was detained by masked ICE agents at 26 Federal Plaza in Manhattan on July 17, 2025, during a scheduled immigration check-in, despite having attended every prior appointment and worn his ankle monitor as required. He had previously been detained for more than a year starting in February 2020, during which he was held in solitary confinement three times, participated in a hunger strike with 25 other detainees over food and living conditions, and was eventually released under a program for detainees with depression. During his 2025 detention he said he witnessed another detainee attempt suicide after being beaten by officers, and he described being held incommunicado before being transferred to Pennsylvania. He was released on August 25, 2025, after paying over $5,000 for his release with help from a nonprofit fund, and his asylum case remains pending with a court hearing scheduled for June 2026.
