Didie Espinoza, a 44-year-old Cuban immigrant, was detained by plainclothes ICE agents in the hallway of a Miami federal courthouse immediately after what was supposed to be his final immigration hearing. Espinoza had arrived at the southern border in May 2022, requested political asylum, and was granted I-220A parole status, which disqualifies him from the Cuban Adjustment Act. At his June 16 hearing, a government prosecutor moved to dismiss his asylum case, and ICE agents detained him as he left the courtroom. His wife, Daysis Salvador, a U.S. citizen who married Espinoza in June after his divorce finalized, recorded the arrest and called it unfair, noting he had not committed any crime. His attorney has filed an appeal and said Espinoza should not be deported while the case is pending. He is currently being held at the Broward Transitional Center in Pompano Beach, and his wife is asking South Florida's Cuban American members of Congress to intervene.
