María Alejandra Montoya, a Colombian mother in the process of adjusting her immigration status, was detained by ICE at Miami International Airport after arriving to pick up her 9-year-old daughter, María Antonia, who had flown alone from Colombia. Officers told Montoya to either sign a voluntary deportation or be taken to a detention center with her daughter; she refused to sign because she was not undocumented. After an eight-to-ten-hour interrogation, mother and daughter were placed in ICE custody and transferred to the Dilley detention center in Texas, where they were held for 128 days. Montoya said an immigration agent told her daughter, referring to the facility, 'Look what an ugly place your mom decided to bring you to,' and that the girl felt guilt over the family's detention. About a month after signing a voluntary departure, the two were deported to Colombia, where they are now trying to rebuild their lives.
