Ma Yang, 37, a Hmong American mother of five who had lived in the Milwaukee area since she was 8 months old, was deported to Laos, a country she had never visited and whose language she does not speak. She was born in Thailand to Hmong refugees and had been a legal permanent U.S. resident until she pleaded guilty in a marijuana trafficking case. After arriving in Vientiane, she was questioned by military authorities and held in a rooming house under guard for five days without being allowed to leave or contact anyone, and she says she has run out of insulin for her diabetes and is running low on blood pressure medication.
