Giovanna Hernandez, a social worker with the Hispanic Immigration Coalition of Alabama (HICA), was detained by ICE following a traffic stop in Leeds, Alabama on a Tuesday morning. Police say she was clocked driving 80 mph in a 70 zone; her brother, Dilan Hernandez, said an ICE agent arrived at the scene after the initial stop and the encounter shifted from a traffic citation to deportation proceedings. The Hernandez family came to the U.S. from Mexico in 2008, when Giovanna was seven years old, and has lived in Alabama for 17 years. Her family says they have tried unsuccessfully to obtain legal status and are now working to bring her home.
