Efraín (a pseudonym), from Michoacán, Mexico, lived almost 30 years in the United States, where he owns a house and cars and worked seven years for a cleaning company. One of his sons serves in the U.S. Army; another is a police officer. "My whole life I've made in the United States," he said. He was held at the ICE facility in Florence, Arizona, where he says a man was kept for weeks after being told his time was served, and staff dismissed a fellow detainee's mental health crisis. Drawing on his years in cleaning, he asked for a sanitary inspection of Florence's water and bathrooms. "I worked for a cleaning company for seven years and I know what clean is." He was flown to Tapachula, Mexico, unable to use the toilet or eat on the flight. "An hour before we land they're still running around like crazy taking off the chains, so that when we get here they don't see we're tied up," he said. He told the other men they should refuse to be unchained so people in Mexico would see how they were brought. HUMSI interviewed him in Tapachula in September 2026.
