Jonathan (a pseudonym) came to the United States at about 11 and lived 20 years in South Carolina, where he was raising two children, now 13 and 8, and applying for DACA. Police took him to county jail on a disorderly-conduct charge, and ICE placed a hold on him. He paid a $1,500 bond, which released him into ICE custody. He was held two weeks at the Folkston ICE Processing Center in Georgia, where medical requests took 24 hours to be seen and, he says, a detainee who needed insulin for his diabetes could not get it. "They treat all of the immigrants like combatants," he said. He was chained hand and foot throughout, including on the removal flight to Tapachula, Mexico, and showed the HUMSI team bruises from the shackles. "How can you use the bathroom in chains?" HUMSI interviewed him in Tapachula in September 2026.
