Saúl: Phoenix man taken at gas station, flown to Mexico's far southern border

Saúl (a pseudonym), from Nogales, lived six years in Phoenix. ICE took him at a gas station, then flew him to the opposite end of Mexico in sandals because his boots were never returned.

Saúl (a pseudonym), from Nogales, Sonora, lived six years in Phoenix, Arizona, until ICE picked him up at a Pilot gas station. He was held two and a half months in Florence and in the Santa Cruz County jail in Arizona. He reports being shackled hand and foot to go to court. "They take you tied up, as if you were a criminal," he said. He spent a night in ICE rooms inside the airport and was told he now faces a 20-year bar from returning. His boots, phone and belongings were never returned, and when officers offered to send him back to detention until they turned up, he left without them. "Keep them, I want to go." He was flown to Tapachula, at the opposite end of Mexico from his home, in sandals. "Look where I am: almost in Guatemala. I'm going from border to border." HUMSI met him the day he arrived in September 2026.
