Yunior (a pseudonym), 52, came to the United States from Cuba at about 20 and lived there 32 years, with his wife, a daughter, a son-in-law and four grandchildren. After an old case in Miami, he reported to ICE every year. In March 2025 he received a letter to report and was detained at his check-in. He was held about five hours at the office, then bused to a facility where he and 20 to 30 men spent six days on the floor of one room. "They threw us in a room there and no one saw anybody for six days," he said. He was then held about six months at the Bluebonnet Detention Facility in Texas, about three months at a second facility and one to two months in Florence, Arizona, about 11 months in all. On January 7, 2026, he was taken from his cell at 7 p.m., put on a bus at 4:30 a.m., and spent one to two weeks on a bus to Villahermosa, sleeping in his seat with one dirty toilet. "They let us go and told us: go back however you can," he said. "They deport you here without being Mexican." He has slept on the street since and lost about 100 pounds, and he lost a job at a tortilla shop because his legs swell. He has had no contact with his family since he was removed, and he told the team that on several days he has thought he would be better off dead. "Sometimes I have thought about it a lot, but then I pull back." HUMSI interviewed him in Villahermosa in September 2026.
