Ernesto (a pseudonym), 73, came to the United States from Cuba and lived there more than 40 years, mostly in Arizona. He worked as a cook and a cleaner, loves chess and a good cigar, and raised three children, all U.S. citizens, who have made him a grandfather. Driving home one day, his arm went numb. He pulled into a motel and asked them to call an ambulance. He had had a stroke that left him with memory loss. When the hospital discharged him, he could not remember how to find the trailer where he lived, where his documents and money were. "I walked from place to place, trying to remember some color, a sign, anything," he said. He asked around for help, and the next thing he remembers, he was in immigration custody. Then he was in Mexico, a country where he had never lived. "By the time I realized it, I was here," he said. "No judge, no court, nothing. They kidnapped me." He says an officer threw his phone and about $300 in cash into the trash. He walks with a cane, his memory and eyesight are failing, and he does not know his way around the city. "Even to speak, I struggle. I don't talk to anyone." He told HUMSI that since being sent to Mexico he has thought about ending his life. "What will become of me? I have no one to turn to. I don't know how to get anywhere. I'm at my limit." As the team was leaving, he said: "I hope you do something." HUMSI interviewed him in Villahermosa in September 2026.
