Manuel de Jesus Montes-Lazo, a Honduran immigrant who had lived in Indiana for more than 15 years and co-owned a roofing business with his U.S. citizen wife, Joanna Garzes Lopez, was arrested by ICE in April 2026 while driving to wake an employee for work. He was held at the Clay County Justice Center in Brazil, Indiana, then transferred to a federal facility in South Texas. Under a September 2025 Board of Immigration Appeals ruling making anyone who crossed the border unlawfully ineligible for bond, Manuel was kept detained despite being married to a U.S. citizen and in the final stages of a marriage-based green card petition. An immigration judge denied his application for cancellation of removal, reportedly reasoning that his wife was well-educated and could support their children without him, and facing years of costly appeals, Manuel waived his appeal and was deported to Honduras. His wife and two young sons later moved to Honduras to reunite with him.
