Sofia (name changed), from Honduras, has lived in the United States since 2023 and has a pending asylum claim. On December 23, 2025, she was walking with her partner through a Walmart parking lot in Bloomington, Minnesota when three ICE agents in civilian clothes with no visible badges stopped them; about eight more arrived. The agents never asked for identification or work permits and did not show a warrant. Sofia pleaded to call her brother to take in her six-month-old baby, who needed to be breastfed, and her older children, but agents refused. She was handcuffed and taken to the Whipple building, where she slept on the floor, and was detained for more than a month. Her 11-year-old daughter stopped going to school to care for the baby while she was held. Sofia has been released and remains in deportation proceedings.
