A man who came to the United States as a child around 2006 has lived here ever since, marrying a U.S. citizen and fathering a U.S. citizen daughter. He held DACA status from 2014 until it expired in 2023, and a renewal application he filed in late 2024 remained stuck on hold with USCIS. He was detained by immigration officers on July 22, 2025, allegedly without being shown an arrest warrant at the time, and has been held since at the California City Detention Center. He also has a pending state criminal case he has been unable to attend because of his immigration detention. For the first several months he was wrongly treated as subject to mandatory detention and denied any chance to seek bond, and when he finally got a hearing months later, he was denied release as a flight risk. A federal judge found his detention unlawful because he was never given a pre-deprivation hearing despite the government's long awareness of his situation, was improperly denied a bond hearing, and never received a proper initial custody determination, and ordered his immediate release.
