Couple detained at Syracuse restaurant, third man flees ICE

A man and woman were detained by ICE at a Syracuse restaurant and are now held hundreds of miles apart, while their roommate, who has a valid work permit, escaped through the basement and is now in hiding.

Oct 22, 2026Syracuse, NY

ICE agents detained a man and a woman at Margarita's Mexican Restaurant in downtown Syracuse around 9:40 a.m. on Monday. The woman is now held at a county jail in Youngstown, Ohio, about 329 miles away, while the man is held at a federal detention center in Batavia, N.Y., roughly 111 miles from Syracuse. A third man who lived with them escaped through the restaurant's basement as agents entered. His attorney, Jose Perez, said the man has a valid work permit and a pending immigration case, but is now traumatized, no longer working, and preparing to leave the area out of fear of being detained. Attorneys for both cases said ICE agents had surveilled the group's home before following them to the restaurant and entered without a warrant. The detained pair's immigration status and next steps remain unclear.
