A Cameroonian man has lived in the United States since 2014, when he entered on a tourist visa. He lives in Humboldt County with his U.S. citizen wife and has a pending application to adjust his status based on their marriage. He has two U.S. citizen children in Texas whom he supports financially, holds a valid work authorization card, and has no criminal history. On October 21, 2026, he attended a green card interview at the USCIS office in San Francisco; at the end of the interview, ICE officers entered the room, handcuffed him, and told him he would be sent to a detention facility in California City, where he is now held. He filed a habeas petition seeking his release, arguing he poses no danger or flight risk. The judge agreed, finding no evidence of danger to the community or flight risk, and ordered the government to immediately release him, return him to the district, and refrain from re-detaining him without a hearing, while scheduling further proceedings on a preliminary injunction.
