Hurricane season collides with immigration enforcement, increasing fears

Undocumented immigrants in Florida and Texas face choices between seeking shelter during hurricanes and immigration enforcement during disaster season. The Trump administration has expanded immigration enforcement capacity, including 287(g) agreements with local law enforcement and FEMA funding for detention centers. Schools, hospitals, and emergency shelters have become locations where immigration enforcement occurs. Federal and state agencies have not provided clarity on whether immigration enforcement would be suspended during natural disasters. Vulnerable communities rely on nonprofits and grassroots organizations for support.
