ICE reopens shuttered prisons as detention centers with troubled pasts

Dec 18, 2025

The Trump administration is reopening shuttered prisons across multiple states as immigration detention centers to accommodate over 65,000 people in ICE custody, the highest level in history. Many of these facilities closed due to allegations of abuse, poor conditions, and mismanagement. These facilities operated with histories of poor conditions and reduced government oversight.
