Journalist Shot in Face With Pepper Balls by Federal Agent in Chicago
Nov 14, 2025

CNN reviewed dozens of videos showing immigration agents using less-lethal weapons including pepper spray and munitions launchers, finding repeated policy violations. Among the cases, a freelance journalist was hit in the face by pepper balls fired by a federal agent during a September 26 protest outside a Chicago immigration detention center. Video shows the agent firing multiple rounds at her from about twenty feet away while she was crouched behind a van; she sustained a bloodied nose but credited a respirator with preventing more serious injury.
