Internal ICE records reviewed by the Washington Post document 1,460 use-of-force incidents across 98 detention facilities from January 2024 through February 2026, including chemical agents and physical restraint tactics. Pedro Cantú Ríos, a 68-year-old detainee with a lung condition held at the Anchorage Correctional Complex in Alaska, said he put a towel over his face and thought he would die after guards fired pepper-ball rounds that released chemical dust during a lunchroom incident; DHS said no detainee was directly struck and that staff ventilated the area. The records show force was used 37 percent more often during the first year of the current Trump administration than the prior year, with the number of people subjected to force rising 54 percent to 1,330 individuals, compared with a 45 percent increase in the detained population over the same period.
