Florida governor announces closure of immigration detention center

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced the closure of the Florida Everglades immigration detention center, known as "Alligator Alcatraz," which opened in July 2025. The facility was intended to be temporary until more permanent detention centers could be secured. DeSantis stated that federal officials now have sufficient capacity to handle immigration detention.
