Miguel Ángel, 67, from Naples, Florida, lived there for over 20 years. He has diabetes, hypertension, osteoporosis, and previously had colorectal cancer requiring chemotherapy. He was apprehended at his home on a Sunday by officers who showed up unannounced. He was detained at Alligator Alcatraz, where he described contaminated water carrying feces, people developing skin conditions, and his own respiratory symptoms going untreated despite repeated requests. After deportation to Mexico, he ran out of insulin because the cost was prohibitive, and his vision began failing. He contacted the Cuban consulate in Cancun, which told him Cuba would not accept him because he had been out of the country for over 40 years.
