Guardian investigation documents systemic medical neglect and abuse at Alexandria deportation facility

Sep 12, 2025 · Alexandria, LA

A Guardian investigation into Alexandria Staging Facility, a private detention center operated by Geo Group in rural Louisiana serving as a hub for Trump administration deportations, documented systemic conditions violations including medical neglect, denial of legal access, and inadequate living conditions. The facility, designed as a 72-hour short-term center with 400-person capacity, routinely held detainees beyond its intended maximum: 20% of over 28,000 detainees held from January-July 2025 exceeded the 72-hour limit, and 742 people have been held there for 10 or more days since October 2023. The facility obtained a waiver of medical screening standards four days before a February 2025 ICE inspection, during which 13 interviewed detainees reported satisfaction despite documented health emergencies including suicide attempts and medical crises reflected in spikes in 911 calls. More than 20,000 migrant detainees passed through the facility's airport on ICE charters at a rate of nearly 200 per day between January and May 2025.
