Sheriff Dallas Baldwin, a Democrat, stated his office has a policy against honoring ICE's civil immigration detention requests, but acknowledged his staff did not follow policy in this case. The Dispatch later obtained the detainer from that case, which two Columbus immigration attorneys identified as a civil detainer, and in a July 9, 2026 statement Baldwin said the issue had been addressed and reinforced with deputies and supervisors, adding that "no law was violated." ICE has arrested more than 100 people at Franklin County jails in 2025 and 2026, according to agency data, and local leaders and immigration advocates, including Ohio Immigrant Alliance Executive Director Lynn Tramonte, have said the jail's cooperation with ICE reflects a systemic pattern rather than an isolated incident.
