Lucia H., a 35-year-old Ecuadorian woman who uses a glass contact lens to protect her cornea, arrived at Camp East Montana around January 11, 2026, with her eye severely irritated from wearing the lens overnight during transfer. She explained to intake officers that she needed to remove the lens immediately using a special device to avoid permanent damage. Officers told her she would have to wait and placed her in a holding cell overnight. Despite repeated requests, they refused to take her to a doctor. By morning, she could no longer see, was in extreme pain, and her eye was bleeding. Doctors diagnosed her with a serious eye infection and glaucoma. She was told she is at risk of permanent vision loss.
