During the 2026 World Cup, ICE conducted an estimated 10,000 arrests across the United States away from stadiums, breaking an unofficial tournament truce, including a raid in Lake Placid, New York, where 14 contract workers—among them a man with a pending asylum case—were detained outside the Grandview Resort, followed days later by seven workers detained en route to Heritage Indian Grill. Data from the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse show about 70 percent of those detained nationwide had no criminal convictions or pending charges, with the majority Latino and tribal leaders reporting targeting of Native American communities. At its peak, ICE detained up to 2,000 people daily, with additional detentions at construction sites in Bemidji, Minnesota, and through workplace raids and traffic stops in Texas, Louisiana, and California. The Lake Placid arrests follow earlier ICE operations in New York's North Country, including the detention of nine workers at a Tupper Lake lumber mill and of workers and family members at a Jefferson County dairy farm.
