ICE arrests thousands away from World Cup stadiums during tournament

During the 2026 World Cup, ICE conducted an estimated 10,000 arrests across the United States in areas far from major stadiums and tourist centers, breaking an unofficial promise of a truce during the tournament. Detentions were concentrated in rural areas including Lake Placid, New York (targeting seasonal workers on temporary visas), construction sites in Bemidji, Minnesota, and through workplace raids and traffic stops across Texas, Louisiana, and California. Data from the Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse indicates approximately 70 percent of detainees had no criminal convictions or pending charges. The vast majority of those detained were Latino, with tribal leaders also reporting targeting of Native American communities. At its peak, ICE detained up to 2,000 people daily.
