Student activist's release order reversed in deportation case
Sep 2025 · New York, NY, Palestine
A federal appeals court reversed a lower court order releasing pro-Palestinian activist Mohsen Mahdawi, a legal permanent resident and Columbia University student. Mahdawi was arrested by immigration agents during a citizenship interview in April 2025 after criticizing Israel and protesting the Gaza war. The 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals found the lower court judge overstepped authority, allowing deportation proceedings to continue through immigration courts.
