Harold A., a 58-year-old Cuban man from Tampa, was deported to Tapachula, Mexico, in February 2026. He described the bus journey from the US border to southern Mexico as inhumane — lasting days, with passengers not allowed to leave the bus and given only bread and water. His feet and ankles were severely swollen upon arrival. He was released with no support, no work authorization, and no identification. He told Human Rights Watch, 'They're casting us aside to die. There's no help; we can't work because we don't have papers. They don't give us anything, nothing. How are we supposed to eat, to pay rent?' He described feeling like a prisoner in Tapachula, unable to leave the city.
