Matías Alejandro Pourrain, a 34-year-old Argentine midfielder, was detained by ICE agents at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport on August 6, 2026, while preparing to board a domestic flight to Los Angeles for a national championship final match. Pourrain arrived in the U.S. in November 2019 on a tourist visa and has lived in the country for seven years. At the time of detention, he held a valid work permit and Social Security number, had a pending asylum application, and maintained a Florida state ID with no criminal record. He also works as a youth coach for his team. According to his attorney, Pourrain was awaiting an asylum appointment. Both Miami United FC and Club de Lyon FC issued statements supporting him, with the teams describing him as an exceptional player and beloved member of their organizations. Pourrain declined voluntary departure and requested an immigration bond. He was transferred to an ICE processing center in Miramar, Florida.
