The Minnesota Sheriffs' Association is negotiating with federal immigration officials, including border czar Tom Homan, on agreements that would let ICE hold people in county jails past their release dates and gain easier access to take them into custody. Hennepin County Sheriff Dawanna Witt said her office is separately pursuing a limited cooperation agreement with federal authorities. Homan cited this "unprecedented cooperation" in announcing a drawdown of 700 federal officers from the Twin Cities enforcement operation, which followed the fatal shootings of Renee Macklin Good on Jan. 7 and Alex Pretti on Jan. 24. Advocacy groups, including Freedom for Immigrants, continue to warn that expanded local-federal cooperation will worsen racial disparities and separate long-term resident families.
