Since Donald Trump began his second term in January 2025, 55 immigrants have died in ICE custody, with 31 deaths recorded in fiscal year 2026 (October 2025–July 2026)—the highest number in more than two decades. The deaths exceed those from Trump's first administration (48 deaths) and include individuals from Mexico, Cuba, Honduras, and Nicaragua, ranging in age from 19 to 75 years old. According to analysis by Associated Press and Physicians for Human Rights, the increase in deaths is disproportionate to the rise in detained population; while the detained population increased 73.5% between 2024 and 2025, deaths increased 191% in that same period. An evaluation of 39 cases by Physicians for Human Rights found serious concerns regarding medical care provided during detention.
