Mamdani said he personally appealed to President Trump to restore protections, emphasizing their vital importance to the city's economy and the Haitian workers who serve as healthcare workers, teachers, construction and hospitality workers. Dozens of municipal employees are affected by the policy. The announcement follows a June 2026 Supreme Court ruling that cleared the way for the Trump administration's termination of TPS protections for Haitian and Syrian immigrants, which the Trump administration had announced in November 2025.
