17 Immigrants Have Died in ICE Detention Since January, Advocacy Group Reports

Apr 29, 2026

Freedom for Immigrants reported that at least 17 people died in ICE custody between January and April 2026, averaging roughly one death per week and marking a record high for the fiscal year. The organization's executive director said most deaths were preventable and resulted from denial of medical care and failure to follow emergency protocols. The group called for ending immigration detention and blocking additional funding to DHS.
