Assim Alkhawaja, a 53-year-old asylum seeker from Saudi Arabia with a valid work permit and no criminal record, was arrested by ICE agents in February while dropping off Lyft passengers near Camp Pendleton. He spent eight days in ICE detention before being released with a GPS ankle monitor and placed in removal proceedings, now required to report to immigration officials almost weekly. He runs a coffee business and holds a doctorate, but says the experience has left him fearful and questioning whether the country still represents its ideals.
