Senator tours SFO airport holding room, cites prolonged ICE detentions
Oct 1, 2026·Location: San Francisco, CA

California Sen. Alex Padilla made an unannounced oversight visit to the San Francisco International Airport's windowless 3,000-square-foot immigration holding room, where more than two dozen immigrants have reportedly been held for days at a time since the start of the year. Padilla said the facility, operated by CBP, is being used as part of the federal government's mass detention and deportation campaign even though it was not meant to be a long-term detention site. Detainees previously told the San Francisco Chronicle they were not given changes of clothes, slept on upright couches with the lights on, and lacked access to dedicated medical care. SFO had the second-highest number of such airport detentions resulting in transfer to ICE custody, after Miami, according to the Chronicle.
