Marcos Gaspar-Da Silva, a 33-year-old Brazilian national with a pending asylum case and an I-130 petition filed by his U.S. citizen wife, was detained by ICE agents in Maine in early January after missing an immigration court hearing. He was held for seven months across multiple facilities, including Mesa's overcrowded AROCC facility where he slept on a feces-covered floor without a blanket, and the Florence detention center, where he lost more than 26 pounds and went without treatment for a toothache until his tooth had to be pulled. On August 12, an immigration judge granted him adjustment of status through his wife's petition and ordered his release; he was dropped off at a Mesa church the next day and reunited with his wife and 11-year-old daughter, though he described lasting trauma and difficulty eating and sleeping.
