Dozens detained in multi-day ICE sweep across Danbury, families separated

ICE conducted a multi-day enforcement operation in Danbury, Connecticut and surrounding communities, with estimates ranging from more than 70 to nearly 100 arrests, including over 50 in Danbury alone and more than 40 separated families; some detainees were sent to facilities as far as Colorado. Danbury Mayor Roberto Alves said one man detained had lived in the U.S. for 30 years, held work authorization and a tax ID, and was pursuing a green card, while Kim Rivas said her fiance with no criminal record was also detained. Video showed agents tasing a man near an auto shop, forcing another man, identified as Johnny Queda, into a store window, and detaining people during traffic stops, outside apartments, in parks, and near a school and daycare. DHS said the tased man resisted arrest and carried a knife and counterfeit ID, and separately arrested 28-year-old Ecuadorian national Leonel Geovanny Morocho-Arteaga during a vehicle stop involving a kitchen knife; DHS said the operation targeted public safety threats and cited four arrests of people with violent crime convictions. U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal estimated fewer than 10% of those detained had pending criminal charges, and Sen. Chris Murphy said some parents were detained after dropping children at a school bus stop, which DHS denied. Gov. Ned Lamont said 'this has to stop,' school attendance dropped by about 700 students, and protesters clashed with agents who used pepper spray at least once. Local advocacy group Danbury Unites for Immigrants, led by Juan Fonseca Tapia, organized know-your-rights outreach and rallies, and officials held a news conference denouncing the operation.
