Kwesi Menezes, a 35-year-old green card holder from New Jersey who had struggled for years with schizophrenia, died Aug. 30 in Guyana after overdosing on his psychiatric medication, months after being deported in April. His family says his mental illness was overlooked during his immigration case, noting he had been jailed after an assault on a police officer during what relatives described as a mental health episode, and later for a probation violation. He was transferred into ICE detention in November and placed on DHS's "Worst of the Worst Criminal Aliens Arrested" list in December, a label his mother and sister said ignored his mental health struggles. His family is now working to bring his remains back to the United States.
