Colombian asylum seeker suffers untreated kidney infection at Otay Mesa detention center

A Colombian mother held for about a year at Otay Mesa Detention Center in San Diego says she has developed a serious kidney and urinary tract infection that has gone undertreated for more than seven months. She fled domestic violence in Colombia and crossed the border in the San Diego-Tijuana area in September 2025 seeking asylum, but has remained in ICE custody since October while her case is contested, including a government attempt to send her to Honduras to seek asylum there instead. Medical records show repeated delays, missed follow-ups, and an emergency room misdiagnosis before she was hospitalized and diagnosed with pyelonephritis, and she says a guard has also mistreated her and once revoked her phone privileges, cutting off contact with her two children.
